In tech circles, AI often conjures up visions of mass job loss and a future where machines do everything better. That’s very likely, but it overlooks another possibility: we’re on the verge of an age that grants us unprecedented free time. Once menial tasks vanish, people will naturally seek richer experiences, deeper entertainment, and more meaningful connections. An important question is how we’ll use these free hours—and who will rise to meet that demand.
I’ve been thinking about something I call “Time Absorption Platforms.” Rather than simply automating workflows, these ventures will aim to fill our liberated schedules with immersive, rewarding pursuits. Whether it’s a generative travel experience that overlays real-time narratives onto a trip, a collaborative world-building MMO where AI and players constantly reshape virtual universes, or a “living language” environment that moves past rote drills to real-time dialogues in simulated worlds, each serves an enduring human desire for novelty, creativity, and community.
AI’s true power might lie in reshaping how we spend our newfound hours. Far from eliminating our capacity to be curious and social, AI can amplify it, freeing people to explore new frontiers of imagination and skill. As automation accelerates, there might be big opportunities in areas that enrich what we choose to do instead. Time Absorption Platforms may channel tomorrow’s most valuable resource: our liberated time.
Will the Universal Basic Income provided to replaced citizens enable them to live richer lives and afford the pursuits of the “Time Absorption Platforms?”
